TABLE 5 (coloured census data): The underlying mortality rates are 100% of those of the SALT 84-86 (C) table up to age 75. Between the ages of 75 and 85 the rates have been blended into the SALT 84-86 (W) table. This has been done to overcome problems of underreporting reflected in the official statistics at the advanced ages. The slope of the SALT 84-86 (C) mortality rates, somewhat contrary to expectation, declines sharply after age 75 with the absolute level of rates eventually falling below those of the SALT 84-86 (W) table.
